A woman who was supposedly expecting quintuplets turns out to be not pregnant at all. She had fooled everyone in her town, especially her boyfriend and maybe even herself that she was really expecting quintuplets. When the woman went to the hospital on her "due date," the doctors tell her that she has never even been pregnant.

Wal-Mart coming to Dallas?

"Wal-Mart coming to Dallas?" Lauren Baheri. Gaston Gazette. n.d. Web. 16 March 2014.

There is a Wal-Mart coming to Dallas. 20 acres have been bought for the placing for this Wal-Mart. This Wal-Mart won't be as bog as a supercenter, it'll just be the Neighborhood Markets, which only have food and basic merchandise.
I can connect to this because I live about five minutes away from where they are going to build this Wal-Mart. Grocery stores near this upcoming Wal-Mart are going to lose a lot of employers and business. This Wal-Mart is going to affect Dallas greatly.
This doesn't really apply to anything I'm doing in my classes.
I feel like they shouldn't build this Wal-Mart. This is going to cause grocery stores in my community to lose employers and business, although it will gain 90 more employers at Wal-Mart. This won't really affect me until I get a job, but it will affect some of the people I know because they work at the Ingles and Food Lion right near where they're building this new Wal-Mart.

- The structure of the text is set up to where it's simple to read and understand. It also uses quotes from officials, such as "“It’s really hard to say,” Palenick said. “We have a large Ingles grocery store in town and a Food Lion, so we already have several aspects of the grocery market covered. But we’re going to reserve judgment for now.” This makes the article legit and believable.

Gassing Operations in the Holocaust

Gassing operations in the Holocaust were pretty gruesome and demented. Nazi's would pick out a group of people who they seemed to be "unworthy of life" and mass murder them by poisoning them with deadly gases. These gases were made with many chemicals along with carbon monoxide. Nazi's would prepare these "gassings" by sealing the gas in a truck or a van. They called these vehicles "mobile gas vans." Killing Jews with deadly gas was more cheaper than any other method they used to kill innocent victims. Nazi's mainly gassed the people who were ill and who were Gypsies. While packing people into the "gas chambers," they would tell the Jews to raise their arms and pack in as tightly as they could. They made them do this because if they held their arms up, they could get more people in the chambers. Also, the more people then the faster they would suffocate. There were at least 6,000 Jews gassed each day.

Prank turns deadly for Arkansas teen

Ford, Dana. "Prank turns deadly for
Arkansas teen." CNN. CNN. 18 Feb.

Girl killed because of prank. 2014.
     Web. 18 Feb. 2014.                <http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/02/1.   7/arkansas-man-guns-down-15-year-   old-girl-for-egging-sons-car-as-a-prank/>

This article was about a 15 year old girl and her friends who were trying to get back at some friends for pranking them. The friends had egged one of the friends' houses, and they were going to get them back. When the girl and her friends arrived at the house, a man came outside and began to fire. He shot the girl in the head and she died.
I can connect to this story in a little way. I am also 15 years old and so was the girl who was killed. It would be terrible to just go to a friends house to get revenge for fun and then end up getting killed. I have never been shot, therefore, I cannot connect to that in no way shape or form. People don't usually get shot at my school for having fun, so I can't make a connection there either. But, sometimes people do get in trouble for getting out of line.
I feel like it was ridiculous how they were just having good ole teenager fun and someone ends up dying. I could understand if their type of fun was life-threatening, but it wasn't. It was good, clean fun and someone gets murdered. This doesn't really effect me, but it makes me think about how careful I need to be whenever going out with friends because you never really know what can happen to you when going places.

Short answer:
What is the central idea of the passage and how is it developed and refined throughout the selection? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.
It seems to me as if the author's central message is to watch out where you go and what you do. You need to be careful about being at the wrong place at the wrong time. The article said, "He opened the door and began to open fire." The article also said the driver had injuries to his leg. Although his injuries were obviously nowhere as serious as the 15 year old, he still was injured and the teenagers were at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Director: Super Bowl halftime show will be creative, cold

Gross, Doug. "Director: Super Bowl halftime show will be creative, cold." CNN Tech. 2 Feb 2014. Web. 2
          Feb 2014. <http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/31/tech/innovation/super-bowl-halftime-                                       hamilton/index.html?hpt=hp_c2>

Bruno Mars Super Bowl Press Conference. 2014. Web. 2 Feb 2014. <http://cdn.rap-up.com/blog/wp-               content/uploads/2014/01/bruno-mars-super-bowl-press-conference.jpg>

Many people are wondering if the lights will go out after Bruno Mars makes an appearance in the Super Bowl halftime show. In 2013, once Beyonce was done performing, the lights in the stadium shut down for nearly 35 minutes. Director of the Super Bowl halftime show, Hamish Hamilton says he is "fairly sure" the same thing that happened last year will not happen again.
I can't really connect to this because I am not a director nor someone famous enough to perform at a Super Bowl. However, I did watch the Super Bowl and I do remember when the lights were out. Everyone was making a big deal out of it on Facebook, Twitter, etc. Bruno Mars is one of my most favorite performers of all-time, so I know I'm going to be watching the Super Bowl, and hopefully the lights shutting down, (if they do) won't stop him from doing what he does best.
This article makes me feel reassured because it lets me know that producers and directors are actually doing something to prevent what has happened before. It also lets me know that they are doing everything in their power to make the Super Bowl performances the best they can be, (even though it will be because of Bruno Mars.) Anywho, I feel like this Super Bowl halftime show will be one of the best yet.
My reaction to this is shocked because once I found out Bruno Mars was going to be the one performing for this big event, I have been excited for this time since then. I'm glad that so many people are working together to make something great happen. Faith in humanity is restoring and that affects me because people in my community may even begin to restoring faith.

How does the author support his claim? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.
The author supports his claim by putting direct things the producer of the Super Bowl halftime show said to make people feel like the same thing that happened last year will not happen again. He also adds some quotes from the producer such as "We knew almost exactly the show we were going to get," to reaffirm people that they have everything under control for the Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show.

Why are lawyers killing themselves?

Flores, Rosa. CNN. Cable News Network, 20 Jan 2014. Web. 20 Jan 2014. http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/19/us/lawyer-suicides/index.html?hpt=hp_c3
Sparacio, Micah. 10 Ways To Fight Depression. 16 May 2011. Web. 20 Jan 2014.

You may not realize it, but some of the most successful business people are also the most depressed people. Lawyers are nearly four times as likely to have depression than people who are not lawyers. This is why lawyers rank fourth place in the top 5 professions with the most suicides.

This article affects me greatly because all of my life, I have always wanted to be a lawyer. After all of the research I have conducted, there are many downs to being a lawyer, including this article which scares me to death about achieving my dream profession. After reading this, I feel like if I turn out to be successful by doing what I've always wanted, I'll become depressed, over-worked and desperate. Nevertheless, nothing will ever stop me from doing what I've been working my whole life for. Though being a lawyer has its many downs, you just have to stay positive and look forward to the ups you'll have if you push through and be strong.

How does the author use language to advance her point of view? The author uses quotes given by researchers and developers to make this article easier to comprehend. For example, Flores uses the quote given by Yvette Hourigan when she stated, "There are a lot of high stress professions." This made me understand easier knowing that there have been actual studies to prove that this statement is in fact true.

Oreos may be as addictive as cocaine, morphine

People's behavior differ when they consume cocaine and when they eat fatty, sweet foods because when one consumes cocaine, it triggers a pleasure center in the brain and causes the body to have certain reactions. But, whenever someone eats fatty and sweet food, it just makes them come back for more. It can become a problem because if they just keep coming back for more unhealthy food, it could lead them to be very unhealthy and obese. Cocaine and Oreo's are the same because they are both highly addicting, and you just can't have one snort of cocaine just like you can't have just one Oreo.
Just because you like the taste of Oreo's, that doesn't necessarily mean that you are addicted. There is a difference between enjoying the taste and being addicted. If you sit on the couch and have about 5 packs of Oreo's, and you eat one right after another, you may be addicted. But, if you eat about 5 or 6 Oreo's and quit eating them, chances are you are not addicted, you just wanted something sweet to eat so you had a few Oreo's.
The results from the rat testing showed that the rats were in fact addicted to Oreo's. The pleasure that the rats showed in tests showed that the rats enjoyed Oreo's more than cocaine.
Not everyone considers their health to be a big issue. Some people just don't care if they become overweight or not. Most people think, "Oh, I'll just have a few and I'll be done." It doesn't always work out like that. It can really add up.
The Oreo's aren't so addicting that you just absolutely cannot quit eating them. You can easily resist Oreo's. Just don't buy any. The study doesn't really say anything about once you start eating them you just can't quit. I think that would be an understatement.
